Dialogue with Dr. Lily Sun
Dr. Lily Sui-fong Sun,granddaughter of Dr. Sun Yat-sen will give a talk at HKU about her grandfather's Three Principles of the People in relation to China's development in the new century. Dr. Lily Sui-fong Sun is the President of Dr. Sun Yat-sen Foundation for Peace and Education. She left her career as an architect to promote peace as advocated by her grandfather.

Against Manipulation - The Role of the Critic in Empowering the Audience
Hong Kong people need to strengthen their defense against manipulation that comes in different guises and from all directions in our increasingly dumbed-down society. And the Hong Kong media need to cultivate more high-quality critics who are able to communicate well for a general audience so that Hong Kong can have a wider and livelier discussion about arts and culture that reflects its cultural dynamism. Those are two of the themes that will emerge when three leading experts gather for a panel discussion at the Fringe Club to talk about the importance of arts and culture criticism in creating a strong cultural environment.

HKU to hold the Opening Ceremony of the Equal Opportunities Festival 2010
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will hold the Opening Ceremony of the Equal Opportunities Festival 2010 on March 9 (Tuesday). Awards will be presented to winners of the three best proposals for "making HKU an inclusive environment" proposal competition. Mr. Lam Woon-kwong, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, and HKU Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President Prof. Joseph Lee, will officiate at the ceremony. Renowned stand-up comedian Mr Vivek Mahbubani will speak on "the meaning of cultural diversity in a university context". The winners of the competition will also share their views on how to promote a diversified campus culture.

Lecture on "Media Pluralism: threats and risks"
The lecture explores the concepts of media pluralism and how to measure threats and risks to media pluralism. Professor Peggy Valcke, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, will present the Media Pluralism Monitor, the outcome of the Independent Study on Indicators for Media Pluralism (a major European Union project that she directed). The discussion investigates whether and how the concept of media pluralism can be used in China and Hong Kong in an era characterized by a major shift from traditional to online media.

HKU to award five Honorary Degrees

"President Obama: One Year Later - What Came Before, What Comes Next? The Civil Rights Movement in the U.S."
Mr. Hugh Williams, Consular Section Chief, U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong,will in the presentation explore the connections between the Civil Rights Movement and President Obama's historic election result. President Obama's triumph as a candidate and the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement before him were not without many challenges. One year later, where do we stand, where are we going?

HKU Libraries: "Underground Front: The Chinese Communist Party in Hong Kong"
Underground Front is a pioneering examination of the role that the Chinese Communist Party has played in Hong Kong since the creation of the Party in 1921, through to the present day. This book brings events right up to date and includes the results of a survey about the Hong Kong public's attitude towards the CCP. The book's author Ms Christine Loh's exposition of the Communist Party's co-optation and persuasion is particularly revealing for anyone not versed in communist-speak.

Global Citizenship Public Lecture - Security First
Professor Amitai Etzioni, Professor of International Relations of the George Washington University, will in the lecture assert that providing basic security must be the first priority in all foreign policy considerations, even ahead of efforts to democratize. He sets out essential guidelines for a foreign policy that builds on moral principles - especially the Primacy of Life - and creates the possibility of establishing positive relationships with Muslim nations and all others.
